Well Child Visits for Toddlers

Well-Child-Visits-for-ToddlersEvery age and stage of your child’s development is wonderful to watch as a parent. The way they see and interact with the world around them, how they use their imagination, and that first moment where they say “all by myself” are exciting milestones. As parents, it can be bittersweet to see our children grow up. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful journey to be a part of. As we continue our well-child visits series, we spotlight toddlers this month. The toddler stage is a thrilling time as we begin to see children interact with and experience the world around them in new ways. Below is a summary of what each well-child visit will entail, along with a checklist that we follow at Briarcliff Pediatrics.

15-Month Checkup:

Your toddler’s 15-month checkup will include a physical exam, measurements of weight and height, and a round of vaccines. Your pediatrician will also evaluate various developmental milestones pertaining to motor skills, speech, and emotional development. By 15 months, your toddler should be able to stand and take a few steps on their own, follow simple instructions, and begin to say words such as “mama” and “dada.” We recommend the below checklist when preparing for your toddler’s 15-month checkup.

  • Perform a physical examination.
  • Measure height and weight.
  • Your child will receive the Hepatitis A vaccine and the Varicela (Chickenpox) vaccines.
  • Assess motor development and your toddler’s ability to stand and take small steps on their own.
  • Assess speech development and your toddler’s ability to say simple words.
  • Assess emotional and social development and their development with children and Adults.

18-Month Checkup:

During your toddler’s 18-month well-visit, your pediatrician will perform a physical exam, measure height and weight, and evaluate motor, speech, and social development. • Perform a physical examination.
  • Measure height and weight.
  • Assess motor development and their ability to walk and climb on their own.
  • Assess speech development as their vocabulary is starting to grow.
  • Assess their emotional and social development as they begin to express emotions such as happiness and anger.

24-Month Checkup:

At your toddler’s 24-month visit, your pediatrician will perform a physical exam and assess their development toward age-specific milestones. Your toddler will receive another Hepatitis A vaccine. We recommend the checklist below when preparing for your toddler’s 24-month checkup.

  • Perform a physical examination.
  • Measure height and weight.
  • Perform a Hemoglobin check.
