Welcoming your baby into this world is exciting, but many first-time parents also experience uncertainty about what to expect. From creating feeding and sleeping schedules to baby-proofing your house, there is a lot that goes into being a new parent. So, to help you transition into parenthood, we would like to share a few tips every new parent should know.
Establish A Feeding Routine:
One of the most frequent questions from new parents is how often they should feed their newborn. The answer isn’t as complicated as you may think. Newborns typically eat around every 2 hours, so in a 24-hour period, they will eat 10-12 times. The easiest way to establish a routine is to simply begin feeding your baby whenever they cry. As time begins to pass, the feeding schedule will become more routine, and you will be able to schedule regular feedings around your and your baby’s schedule.
Create A Soothing Sleep Environment:
Creating a soothing sleep environment is healthy for both you and your baby. You can expect your infant to sleep between 14-17 hours per day, so creating a tranquil sleep space ensures your infant is well rested. When creating a bedtime routine for your baby include activities that will sooth and calm your baby. Start by giving your baby a warm bath and change them into a clean diaper and fresh clothing. Keep the lights in their room dim and the temperature comfortable. Their crib should be free of blankets and toys, as these items can become hazards to their safety as they sleep. Lastly, try swaddling your baby and place them on their back for a restful sleep.
When To Call Your Pediatrician:
Newborn babies will have a series of well-visits to their pediatrician during their first few months. Routine exams, measurements, and immunizations are all part of these visits. As a parent or caregiver, take some time during these visits to discuss any concerns you may have about your baby’s health. If you notice your child is unwell in between visits, don’t hesitate to call your pediatrician and schedule a sick visit. If you notice any of the symptoms below, you may want to contact your pediatrician:
- Refusing to eat
- Experiencing diarrhea and vomiting
- Unconsolable crying
- Skin rashes
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Experiencing a rectal temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit during the first two months of life
You will not be inconveniencing your pediatrician, so if your gut instinct tells you to call your child’s healthcare provider, it is best to err on the side of caution.
