The Truth About Vaccine’s in Today’s World

The Importance of Well Child Check-UpsRecently, discussions surrounding vaccines have become sensitive and complex, leading many to avoid the subject altogether. There are various perspectives and concerns surrounding vaccination, and while some are understandable, widespread myths have led many parents to forgo essential vaccines. At Briarcliff Pediatrics, we believe open, honest conversations are the best way to present the facts. So, today we are tackling two common myths surrounding vaccination to help you make healthy and informed decisions for your family.

Myth One: Vaccines for eliminated diseases are no longer necessary

In 2000, the United States determined that the measles virus had been eliminated due to the highly effective vaccine. However, in July of this year, there have been over 1200 new measles cases reported. This raises a very understandable question: how can measles return if it was eliminated 25 years ago? Because this is a great question, and one we hear frequently, allow us to explain. The answer lies in the definition of the word “eliminated.” When people hear the word eliminated, they believe it means that the virus is extinct globally. What eliminated actually means is that the infection rate for a virus reaches zero in a specific area, but globally the virus still exists. This misunderstanding causes some to believe that vaccination is no longer necessary when quite the opposite is true. Strong vaccination programs can lead to the elimination of a virus, but once large groups of the population begin to forgo vaccination, the once eliminated virus can return. The best way to maintain disease elimination is through strong and consistent vaccination programs.

Myth Two: Multiple vaccines can overwhelm the immune system

If you look at the recommended vaccination schedule provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics, you may feel overwhelmed. It is a common misconception that taking multiple vaccines at once can overwhelm your child’s immune system and cause complication. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, vaccine combinations have been used since the 1940’s, and decades of research have shown that this method is both safe and effective at preventing serious disease or chronic health problems.
